Clare's Law:

A recent article in the Metro reported that in England and Wales, two women in England and Wales are killed by a former or current partner, every week. Whereas 10 per year fall victims to this crime in Scotland.

Clare Wood became one of the victims in 2009 when she was strangled by her boyfriend, George Appleton, a man with a history of violence and known to the police, who she met on the internet.

The Government's Victims' Commissioner Louise Casey is mounting a campaign called Clare's Law to allow people to find out whether new partners have a violent past. Police would be able to warn women if a new partner had a violent past under plans to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from domestic abuse.

A campaign for the change was launched in July 2011, with the support of police chief. The proposal, which is modelled on Sarah's Law, is backed by Ms Wood's father Michael Brown, comes amid concern that women are increasingly meeting men via the internet with little or no knowledge of their pasts.

Ms Blears said: ''Women in Clare's situation are often unaware of their partner's previous relationships and this can mean they start a relationship with someone with no idea if they have a violent past. Clare's tragic death shows how vulnerable women aren't always protected under the current law, and until women are given the right to know if their partner has a history of serial domestic abuse, they can't be sure of the risk that they face."

Ms Blears believes that changing the law women will be empowered to take informed action about their relationship which will give them the chance to protect themselves and prevent domestic abuse from happening before it begins.'

There has been a lot of media coverage regarding the proposal, with varied opinion. One report from the Guardian states that "Clare's Law" is based on the assumption that people would make safe choices about relationships if they were better informed.  However, it's thought that the proposal would not be able to stop serial abusers to continue. The Guardian's Lucy Reed continues, the scheme could allow the sharing of information, however, she also predicts potential victims being persuaded that the accusations to be malicious gossip, a misunderstanding, perhaps mistaken identity or, that their partner was defending themselves against a violent ex-partner.

Domestic violence is at epidemic levels in this country and Libby Brooks is concerned that resources for those escaping it are badly funded and under-imagined. After reading into this, it is clear that there are many opinions and contrasting views on this subject.

But what do you think? Should this law be past? Do you think this would help reduce the number of cases of domestic violence? Or do you think that it would be a false sense of empowerment? We would really love to hear your opinion on this subject, so please let us know by commenting on our facebook page or you can tweet about it and follow us on twitter.

End of Summer Party!

With Kids End of Summer Party on Saturday was so much fun! There was around 100 people there and everyone had a great time. For those of you who regularly read our blog will know that the party was held at Calton Fire Station on Saturday and we are pleased to let you all know that it was a success.

We are so grateful to Micro Supply Co. for their kind donation and want to thank them and many other companies including Epilepsy Scotland in helping us source donations through Twitter. We would also like to thank Mairi McMinn and Donna Henry for swamping us with homemade cakes. Mairi went out her way to get donations from Tunnocks and Kiplings, which went down a treat with the kids. Calton Fire Station staff were fantastic and the kids had a go at using the water hoses and loved the fire appliances. Allied Credit International (UK) sent 4 volunteers who were, as always, a huge help. And a big thank you to the staff and ladies who delivered the workshops and face painting, all of whom volunteered their own time. All of these kind donations are so greatly appreciated and meant that tour first ever End of Summer Party will be remembered as being such great fun.

We have added the photos from the party to our facebook page, so take a minute to take a look at all the fun we had!

Have you tagged yourself in the Mid Summer Ball photos yet?

On June 23rd this year the Hilton Hotel played host to With Kids' charity Mid Summer Ball. We are delighted to report that the event was a great success and through the generosity of those who attended, we managed to raise in excess of £17,000. We really cannot thank everyone enough and we are sure you will all agree that everyone looked fabulous.

For those of you who shared the night with us, we have posted some photos of the night on our facebook page and would like to invite you all to take a minute to view the photos and tag yourself or people you know.

The photos seen here are just some of the photos that were taken on the night. To see the rest and to tag yourself, visit our facebook page. Thank you all again, for a wonderful night. The funds raised will go a long way in helping us and the work we do for the kids we support and their families.

End of Summer Party! Can you donate any party supplies?...

It's the end of With Kids' Summer Programme and we are marking the occasion with a party! The kids and families have had such a great fun filled summer and the party will be a lovely ending to great times had. Many of our families have enjoyed trips to Kelburn Country Park, camping at Ardgartan Campsite as well as enjoying our Wednesday night cinema nights.

The summer programme would not have been the same without our fantastic volunteers from Allied International and we would like to thank them for all their help.

The party kicks off at 1:30pm this Saturday (13th August 2011) at Calton Fire Station and we expect between 60-100 people to be there. The kids can look forward to a tour of the fire station from the Fire Fighters as well as checking out the fire engines. We are so grateful to Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Services for being so kind and allowing us to hold the party at the station and we are sure the kids will have a ball.

Although we have the venue arranged we are also looking for help in finding donations for party food supplies. We have a fully functioning kitchen, meaning we have the facilities to prepare food. However, given our really tight budget we are looking for any donations of any kind that would help us make the party more of a success and would really appreciate any food donations. We are also looking for someone to help with our entertainment in the form of a magician or a juggler or any kind of kids entertainer. We fully appreciate that it is a lot to ask for someone to give up their time, however, we would really appreciate any help.

Do you know of anyone that can help us out with the basic party food supplies such as bread for sandwiches, ham/cheese for fillings, cakes or juice or any party food supplies? If you can help out in anyway please contact Suzy by email on s.bair@withkids.org.uk.

As a charity we rely on the kind donations from supporters and greatly appreciate any additional help. Thank you to all our current and future supporters. Please visit out website to find out more information on the work that we do to support families and children in the East End of Glasgow. You can also follow us on twitter or join our facebook community to keep up to date on all our activities and news.

With Kids Charity Ambassador, David Eustace the face of Panasonic Lumix G3

One of 'With Kids' ambassadors David Eustace is the face of the new Panasonic Lumix G3. We think this is pretty great given David's humble beginnings as an East End Glaswegian. We are so proud to have David as one of our Ambassadors as his support and love for the charity has helped raise awareness for what we do.

With Kids is based in the East End of Glasgow which has some of the highest levels of poverty in Scotland and the UK. Living in or near an area of high poverty can affect people directly or indirectly through crime, lack of amenities, poor educational facilities etc. We work to support families and children who find themselves in difficult situations and those who struggle to cope with these issues.

As a famous contemporary photographer, we think David is the ideal choice to be one of the main faces for Panasonic's newest compact system camera. The international advertising campaign for the Lumix G3 highlights David's use of the camera. Through the campaign we are able to not only see how fantastic and high quality the camera is, but we are able to get a glimpse of how David views the world and also how he captures images of ordinary life, yet he makes them look extraordinary. In David's words 'the Lumix G3 allows him to shoot the world as he sees it.' Take a look for yourself at the advert below:

There are also great videos available that show us the making of the advert, which allows us to see extra footage of David as he gives us his views of the camera in more depth:

To find out more on David's involvement in With Kids, please visit our blog as he gives an in-depth 3 part interview on why he has chosen to be one of our Ambassadors. Thank You David. For more information about the charity, or to make a donation, visit www.withkids.org.uk

With Kids Camping Success!

The With Kids camping trip at the weekend was a total success. Our families went to Ardgartan Campsite and where made to feel very welcome.

All the families had fun and got involved in all the weekend's activities.  Our swim in Loch Long was a highlight for everyone.  On Saturday the children collected mussels, which they cleaned and when cooked they enjoyed as a tasty snack. The pesky Midges’ were out in force, but we didn’t let that spoil the fun.

We would like to offer a very special Thank You to the British Army 32 Signal Regiment, who were on their kayaks on the loch on Saturday. They were so kind in letting the children enjoy some time on the water with them. Below is a picture of some of the kids enjoying their time on the kayaks.

We would also like to thank all the families that took part and we look forward to our next camping trip. Have you ever been to Loch Long? Or have been camping recently? Please let us know if you have any comments or feedback on this post by sharing your thoughts on our facebook page or why not follow us on twitter.
