With Kids Charity Ambassador, David Eustace the face of Panasonic Lumix G3

One of 'With Kids' ambassadors David Eustace is the face of the new Panasonic Lumix G3. We think this is pretty great given David's humble beginnings as an East End Glaswegian. We are so proud to have David as one of our Ambassadors as his support and love for the charity has helped raise awareness for what we do.


With Kids is based in the East End of Glasgow which has some of the highest levels of poverty in Scotland and the UK. Living in or near an area of high poverty can affect people directly or indirectly through crime, lack of amenities, poor educational facilities etc. We work to support families and children who find themselves in difficult situations and those who struggle to cope with these issues.

As a famous contemporary photographer, we think David is the ideal choice to be one of the main faces for Panasonic's newest compact system camera. The international advertising campaign for the Lumix G3 highlights David's use of the camera. Through the campaign we are able to not only see how fantastic and high quality the camera is, but we are able to get a glimpse of how David views the world and also how he captures images of ordinary life, yet he makes them look extraordinary. In David's words 'the Lumix G3 allows him to shoot the world as he sees it.' Take a look for yourself at the advert below:

Elaine C. Smith - With Kids Links families of the East End together..

In this final part of two videos, Elaine talks passionately about the East End, and how it is home to very creative, talented and successful public figures. She then goes on to give us her advice to the kids if they want to achieve their goals. Work hard, be creative and be involved.

As the interviews goes on, Elaine talks about how there wasn't an organisation like With Kids when she was growing up, and how they could have benefited many of the families in Glasgow's East End. Towards the end of the interview we begin to discuss how With Kids Links families of the East End together, and their is a strong sense of community there.

Finally Elaine finishes off by talking about how the scottish people never let you forget where you came from, and how important it is to remember where you came from, but for Elaine, it would take a lot more to make her forget where she was born and raised, as she still lives in the East End today.

Elaine C. Smith - Early intervention is essential to the children..

We are delighted to announce that Elaine C. Smith has agreed to come on board as a With Kids Ambassador.

Like many of our other ambassadors, Elaine was born and raised in the East End of Glasgow, and no matter how successful she has been in her career, she has never forgot where she came from and still calls Glasgow's east end home.

In this part one of two videos, Elaine explains how she admires the work that With Kids do, with not only supporting the kids in poverty stricken areas, but helping the Parents also. Elaine then talks about how she loves living in the east end, as it keeps her down to earth and keeps her aware that there are still people who are living in abject poverty.

Although Elaine admitted the east end is not the easiest place to live, that's what she loves about it, and the fact that her own children are growing up aware of their surroundings and know that there are less fortunate than them.

Elaine then goes on to talk about how the East End never had an organisation like With Kids when she was growing up, how their services could have changed many families' lives and how With Kids' early intervention is essential to the children of the East End.

Kathleen McDermott Carberry becomes a With Kids ambassador

Kathleen was born and raised in the east end of Glasgow, although despite all of her success, she has remained loyal to the city she has spent all her life in, and to this day, still calls Glasgow her home.

To young people growing up in deprived areas, Kathleen is an inspiration. This is why she was invited back to her former school, St. Andrews secondary to speak to pupils.

It is also the reason why With Kids, approached her to become one of the charity's ambassadors alongside fellow Glaswegians, actor Robert Carlyle, and photographer David Eustace.

"I grew up in a stable background but a lot of kids didn't. There was no charity like With Kids back then. Now all i can do is raise awareness. 

I am born and bred in the east end of Glasgow. I was raised in Barlanark, it's not the most glam of places. I still speak with a Glasgow accent and i am not ashamed of it."

On June 23rd at the Hilton Hotel a fashion show with a difference will help to raise funds for some of Glasgow’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable children. The show will be organised by With Kids, the charity that seeks to help these children in Glasgow’s East End.

The With Kids Charity Ball & Fashion Show will be hosted by Kathleen McDermott Carberry, the Bafta Award winning actress who is herself a native of Glasgow’s East End. Kathleen will be joined on the night by John Amabile, the celebrity interior designer and television presenter.

Celebrity photographer, and fellow East End inhabitant, David Eustace has joined forces with Glasgow Children's Charity "With Kids" as an ambassador to the charity.

David grew up in a poverty stricken area of the East End of Glasgow, and he knows first hand of the difficulties and disadvantages that most children in the east end have had to experience, so he offers his own words of wisdom to help the children reach their targets in life.

In this final part of three videos, David speaks of how it is important for kids to remember that the only thing that can hold them back is themselves, and how they must make the effort to achieve their goals.

In a few weeks time, one of the most unique and moving events Glasgow has ever seen will take place in the city this year.

On June 23rd at the Hilton Hotel a fashion show with a difference will help to raise funds for some of Glasgow’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable children. The show will be organised by With Kids, the charity that seeks to help these children in Glasgow’s East End.

The show will feature clothes from Marks and Spencer and perhaps some exclusively designed t shirts made by East End children and their families. These children themselves will take to the catwalk to model the clothes they have designed.

In this way, not only will much-needed funds be raised for one of Glasgow’s most important charities but the children will be undertaking something that can empower them in a way that they have never before experienced. Owing to grinding poverty, severe deprivation and chronic ill health in their families, these children will never have had the opportunity to see an event such as this, far less participate in it.

With Kids seeks to break the cycle of poverty and deprivation in Glasgow’s east end by intervening in the lives of young children with play therapy schemes that seek to strengthen their self-esteem and bring out their innate gifts. The boost to their confidence and self-esteem will be incalculable and will help to change their lives.

The event itself will be hosted by Kathleen McDermott Carberry, the Bafta Award winning actress who is herself a native of Glasgow’s East End. Kathleen will be joined on the night by John Amabile, the celebrity interior designer and television presenter.

David Eustace becomes a With Kids ambassador - Part One

Celebrity photographer, and fellow East End inhabitant, David Eustace has joined forces with Glasgow Children's Charity "With Kids" as an ambassador to the charity.

Having grown up in a poverty stricken area in the east end of Glasgow in the 60's and 70's and raised by adoptive parents Jimmy and Susan Eustace, David knew of the troubles that families have gone through in the less fortunate areas of the city, but he encourages children never to let the fact that you are from the east end hold you back.

 "It doesn't matter what your second name is, or where you come from, or what other members of your family have done, it's all about you, tomorrow and what you can achieve. You can have dreams, you can do it, but it will involve a lot of bloody hard work."


In this part one of three interviews, David talks of his up-bringing in the east end of Glasgow, his happy memories of his childhood, and tells us the advice he would give to children in order for them to reach their goals.

Kathleen backs the charity helping kids where she grew up

When a casting director spotted Kathleen McDermott walking down a Glasgow street, it turned out to be the moment that changed her life...

The chance meeting led to Kathleen starring in Lynne Ramsay's Morven Callar, a role that won her a Scottish BAFTA award for best newcomer.

But Despite rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous, attending showbiz parties and jetting to film festivals around the world, flame haired Kathleen never forgot where she came from and this never left her.

And unlike many celebrities who move away when they achieve success in the film industry, Kathleen 33, has remained loyal to her roots and still calls Glasgow home.

She's lived in the east on all her life and recently chose to build her family home in Gartcosh on the city's outskirts.

Father's £800 safety net for movie star

This is an extract from the coverage in the Daily Mail, from our recent interview with Robert after him deciding to become a With Kids ambassador

He is a Hollywood star whose TV and cinema roles from the rural Bobby Hamish Macbeth to the violent Begbie in Trainspotting have made him a wealthy man.

But Robert has revealed that his father always kept a secret savings account for him to use if his career flopped.

His father, Joseph Carlyle, had saved £800 to give to his son to help him re-launch himself as a painter and decorator if he struggled to find acting work according to Robert in Part Three of our interview with him.

New Ambassador for "With Kids" tells kids to aim high no matter where they come from.

Celebrity photographer, and fellow East End inhabitant, David Eustace has joined forces with Glasgow Children's Charity "With Kids" as an ambassador to the charity.

David grew up in the poverty stricken area in the 60's and 70's by adoptive parents Jimmy and Susan Eustace and says that "It doesn't matter what your second name is, or where you come from, or what other members of your family have done, it's all about you, tomorrow and what you can achieve. You can have dreams, you can do it, but it will involve a lot of bloody hard work."

After leaving school with no qualifications, David went on to become a prison officer in his early 20s at notorious Barlinnie Prison in Glasgow. He said it taught him a lot about life but it wasn't his calling. He said: "Quite a few boys I grew up with ended up in the jail. I tried never to judge them. I tried to understand them".

A poor show as child poverty is rising in Britain.

Britain is one of the world's richest countries, but it has some of the highest rates of children living below the poverty line. With Kids is based in the East End of Glasgow ,this area has some of the highest levels of poverty in Scotland and the UK. Although the facts and figures that follow may seem bleak, not all families will have the same issues. However, living in or near an area of high poverty can affect you directly or indirectly through crime, lack of amenities, poor educational facilities etc.

The sheer volume that may need help means that sometimes children and families might not get the support they need; a parent struggling with a child with a learning difficulty or emotional issue might not know where to turn, a parent who's a former addict may be afraid to ask for help in case social services intervene. All families, regardless of background find that they have difficulties from time to time and too often parent's may not be aware of available support or the best action to take. With Kids aims to fill that gap and to provide flexible support that is suited to the needs of children and parents.

Some Facts and Figures:

In some postcode areas in the east end of Glasgow, 60% of children live in workless households, almost 50% of adults of working age are on incapacity benefit and life expectancy can be as low as 54. - Glasgow Herald

Over 90,000 children in Scotland live in severe poverty - of these:

• 72% of children parents’ are not in work

• 66% of children are in families claiming income support, job seekers allowance and incapacity benefit,

• 45% of mother’s of children have no educational qualification,

• 1 in 2 children live in single parent families,

• 10% of children are from an ethnic minority, compared to 2.6% not in poverty,

• 41% of children live in families with a disabled adult, compared to 17% of children not in poverty. - Living Below the Radar:

Poorer children are five times more likely to regularly miss school. - BBC News

Poverty in Glasgow is being blamed for malnutrition in almost one in five youngsters who attended a children's hospital in the city. Health experts say many families cannot afford a more varied diet. - BBC News

Scotland has the worst child poverty, the worst diet and the worst dietary illness in Europe. - Danny Phillips, Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland.

In Scotland half the working-age adults who are long-term sick or disabled are assessed as being at high risk of developing a mental illness. By contrast, only one in seven of those who are in work are assessed as being at high risk. For those who are unemployed, around one in three are assessed as at high risk. - The Poverty Site.

Addiction of all types - to nicotine, alcohol and drugs - is often found in people with a wide variety of mental illnesses. Clinical reports state that at least half of those who seek mental health treatment have some type of addiction. - Science Daily

Drug addiction is more frequent in individuals who have a mental illness compared to individuals without any mental disorder. Likewise, people who are drug dependent are more likely to suffer from mental disorders than non-dependent people. - Green Facts

NHS audits show that there were more than 10,700 emergency admissions to Glasgow hospitals for adults with alcohol-related problems over a 12 month period from 2007 to 2008. Statistics from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde reveal that 42% of Glasgow’s schoolchildren admit to being drunk at least once a month, with a further 27% admitting they are drunk on at least a weekly basis. In 2009 eight children under the age of 12 from Glasgow were admitted to hospital because of excessive alcohol consumption. Areas of high deprivation such as Glasgow East, have almost double the percentage of smokers than in affluent areas. - Evening Times.

Hilton in the Community Foundation donated to the With kids Xmas appeal 2010

With kids would like to say a huge thank you to the Hilton in the Community Foundation.

We are really grateful for donating a further £1,000 to the With Kids Xmas 2010 Appeal.

A total of £8,000 has now been donated by the Hilton in the Community Foundation to With Kids.

Queenspark Builders hard graft for With Kids

The first phase of the With Kids drop-in centre development has now been completed with our brand new kitchen being fully installed and operational. The team at Queenspark Builders in Glasgow fitted the kitchen in 3 days.

With Kids would like to thank the team at Queenspark Builders for all of their hard graft and we can now utilise the fully modern and equipped kitchen when families drop by.

We can now begin work on a cafe, workshop area and a specially designed therapy room. It's all been made possible with our recent funding from the Asda Foundation. We'll keep you up to date on the rest of our work.
